Fun Fall Giveaway!

By Jodi Roberts on October 3, 2011

I have something really special for you today!  I am sharing a wonderful new product I’ve found, this crayon roll/car caddy from Caboose Cloth.  Julie Kieras, owner of Caboose Cloth, will be giving this adorable, hand made item to one of my lucky readers!

 Julie says:

“These rolls/caddies are great for young children who like to take their artwork/toys with them on the road. Perfect for restaurant quiet play, birthday party favors, stocking stuffers…I like to mix/match fabric colors and patterns so the inside has a contrasting print or color, and the ribbon tie also contrasts! Or for something REALLY special, order one with a unique hand-drawn, applique design on the front!”

This week, Julie is offering her standard roll with a choice of two fabrics to the lucky winner.

Here’s what you need to do:

  • 1 comment = 1 entry
  • Check out the Caboose Cloth Etsy Shop to see more products (cute wipes holders too!)

Fabulous Finds Friday! September 9th Edition

By Jodi Roberts on September 9, 2011

TGIF!

Sure, it’s been raining non-stop for, oh I don’t know, at least 2 years now and for many of us, the upcoming weekend will be charged with memories and difficult emotions.  But still, it’s Friday, and I’m holding on to that with all I’ve got.  So, for your viewing pleasure, I present you with my favorite finds of the week.

Apple Nachos

Yum!

First up are these Apple Nachos from Shugary Sweets. How yummy do those look? And they’re idiot-proof too. There’s no cooking involved so it’d be virtually impossible to screw these up. I will definitely be making those soon.  So go ahead, invite me to that party you’ve been planning and I’ll bring these!

Next on my list are these really hip mason jars by Pure and Noble. I thought these were way too cool and a cinch to make. What a great use of old jars. I could see usingMason Jars these in the powder room to hold essentials. Or these would be really great as part of a homemade holiday gift – if you make jam, say, or fill these bad boys with cocoa and marshmallows and attach a cute little homeade tag. Hmm, maybe you should invite me to your Christmas party too, yes?

Ok, while you’re updating your party lists I’ll move on to item number three, which happens to be my last item this week. Yep, only three, short week. This excerpt from from Tina Fey’s new book, Bossy Pants, was posted by Alligator Sunglasses on StumbleUpon.com and it is so funny! Definitely worth the read. I’m feeling a special kinship with Tina these days, ever since a random UPS man in an elevator told me I look like her. Definitely take a minute to read it – we could all use a laugh!

Tina

Me

Until Next time!

                  Artfully Yours,

Power to the People – pretty please?

By Jodi Roberts on August 31, 2011

Photo Credit: NRECA, Basin Electric Power,

Powerless.  That’s what people are saying about me.  Isn’t that mean?  I am not powerless!  I am simply without electricity.  For 5 days now, with no end in sight.  True, I am currently at the mercy of the electric company, and I suppose that does imply a loss of control of the situation.  But still, powerless?  I reject the idea.

Where there’s a Starbucks, there’s a way.  The show must go on! The kids are back in school and I will continue to paint by candlelight.  It’s sort of fun!  Well, not really, but I’m trying to remain positive.  Please continue to post, comment and query.  It’s business as usual.  It’s Off The Wall.

Fabulous Finds Friday – August 26th

By Jodi Roberts on August 26, 2011

I’ll admit, today’s edition of “Fabulous Finds” relies on a heavy dose of nepotism, but there is a method to my madness.  I felt a “Back to School Edition” was in order, so here it is.  Sandwich bag

First up is a class being offered at 2 Hands Studios in Annapolis.  These ladies (who also happen to be friends of mine) have a fabulous studio where they turn out beautiful jewelry, purses and accessories and also teach workshops for adults and kids.  This month they are offering a class in “reusable sandwich bags”.  These bags are a real neat idea and making your own is even sweeter.  Check it out .

Another favorite of mine is not really new for me, but it is new again this season.  My friend Heather (wow, another friend!), of The Princess and The Pea  makes these adorable girl’s ponchos, among her other amazing wares.  I bartered one for my daughter last spring and I can hardly wait for the chilly weather so she can wear it again.  These are just too cute.  I happen to know that Heather is not doing custom orders right now, so you’ll have to buy from her current stock or be willing to wait a bit, but it’s worth it.

This next item made my list as more of a puzzlement than anything else.   I was wandering around on Etsy one day and came across these Apple Sweaters.  Yes, you read that correctly.  Apple sweaters, as in a sweater for your apple.  Not your iPad people, the actual fruit.   apple sweater I don’t understand why anyone would want one of these, do you?  But Kristie, of Creations by Kris0376 is selling lots of these!  And she’s not the only one.  If your apple is chilly, there are lots of options for those who desire to play dress up with their food.  Kudos to you, Kristie!  I thought it was humorous enough to share.

My final fabulous find of the week is not a back-t0-school item, but it’s something I am coveting and it’s on my fPallet Headboardall home improvement list.  It’s this wood pallet headboard.  It’s not my usual style but for some reason I find it just dreamy.  And I was thrilled to find out that my husband likes it too!  He’s totally on board for this project.  I can’t wait!

I wish you all a happy weekend!  For those in the path of Irene, please stay safe, see you all next week!

Artfully Yours,

Fabulous Finds Friday – August 19th, 2011

By Jodi Roberts on August 19, 2011

Hello Dear Readers!

I’m trying out a new blog feature called “Fabulous Finds Friday”.  I figure it like this: I spend tons of time online, reading design and business blogs, researching ideas, browsing gallery and artist websites and performing random searches.  I discover lots of really cool things and why should I have all the fun?  So I decided that at the end of each week, I would share with my readers the best of the best.

No agenda here, just some fun, inspiring ideas for your viewing pleasure.

The Indie Fixx blog featured some amazing animated photographs by Jamie Beck this week, which I think is about the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.  Here’s one of my favorites, look closely at the shoes.  Isn’t that spectacular?

Then on Wednesday, I read this gripping blog post on IttyBiz called What if You Succeed.  It’s a bit long, but I promise it’s worth your time.  Very funny, in an ironic sort of way.

Also this week, a friend of mine posted a really fun project on Facebook.  She got the Idea from Parenting Magazine, but I think Liza’s look better than the original.  If you’re so inclined, these would be really sweet invites for a late summer party.  Click the photo to find the instructions.

Lastly, I was fascinated by a wall hanging I saw at the dentist’s office.  It was woven, almost a rug, and made out of old magazines.  I wanted to snap a pic while I was there, but then the hygienist called my name and I forgot.  Later, I searched online, and found these:

Magazine Picture FrameMagazine Bead Bracelet

Neither is a wall hanging, as you can see.  But they’re both really neat because they make great use of old magazines, which is something I’m always looking for.  And neither project requires any special skill.  Once again, click the pix to get the direx.

So get cracking on those holiday gifts, would ya!  I’ll check my mail around December 23rd.  Thanks.

That is all I have for you beautiful people this week.  Enjoy, and have a great weekend!  Remember to Tweet, Like and Share.  Sharing is caring.  Oh yeah!  Please leave a comment and let me know what you think of these FINDS.

Spring Ahead to Fall – A Page From My Journal

By Jodi Roberts on August 16, 2011

As the summer draws to a close, I am beyond excited.  I know, I know, that’s a pretty unpopular opinion.  But in less than 2 weeks, I will have both of my children in school full time.  For the first time since I started Off The Wall Painting in 2004, I will have a steady work schedule!  Since I have no murals scheduled for the near future, (which can change on a dime) this means I will be spending the majority of my time in my newly finished studio.

My New Studio

Here’s a gratuitous pic of my studio, in case you’ve forgotten how deliciously bright and yellow it is.

So, putting the mixed emotions of the mommy part of me aside, this is a really thrilling time for me!  I have so many plans and ideas swirling through my wee brain, it is difficult to focus.  But focus I will.  I am going to make it shine!

I’m kicking things off this week with the Annapolis Art Walk 2011 on Thursday, August 18th from 5-9PM.  My painting “Open Hearted” will be for sale at MFA Circle Gallery.  If you’re local, come and check out this event featuring art, artists, demonstrations and music.  Sounds like a fun date night, which is how I’ll be doing it.

After that, I will be working feverishly on my holiday ornaments, which are currently listed on Etsy, and still available at the sale price until August 31st.  I am so passionate about these and I hope that all my “Special VIPs” (you!) have the opportunity to pick these up at the reduced rate.  I have also recently begun showing my work at Sidestreet Framers in Severna Park, MD and I’m looking forward to working closely with them this season.   I will be forming more relationships with shops and galleries as the need and opportunities arise.

One thought that has me super-energized is that I am planning to teach my first ever floor cloth class this spring!  I hope to be making the official announcement on that very soon.   Additionally, I will be wrapping up my almost completed website project and launching my new line of kids stepstools, which I intend to get out to stores by spring.

On the home-front, I have volunteered to help plan our community Fall Festival and I’m looking forward to getting involved with that and making it a great event.  Fall home improvement projects abound, but they will be a nice change from the sweaty outdoor summer tasks.  And lastly, I am eager to watch my kiddos flourish this year.  My son is turning the corner to third grade and my little girl is finishing her last year of pre-K.  I am anxiously awaiting the wonders that are in store for them this year.  Blue skies are ahead and I sincerely hope the same (if not better!) is true for all of you.

Artfully Yours,

Sometimes the best stuff in life are the things you don’t plan…

By Jodi Roberts on July 28, 2011

Are you a planner/organizer or a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kind of person?  Do you live by the clock or are you on “island time”?

One look at my kitchen counter says it all.  At any given time, there are several items that call this counter home – my dayplanner, my iPhone, my glasses, a pen, a stack of papers, coupons and scribbled lists and, depending on the hour, either a cup of coffee or a glass of wine.

My name is Jodi, and I am a “planner”.  I love lists, calendars, spreadsheets, clocks and watches.  I take pride in being on time for things and receive deep satisfaction from crossing things off my “list”.  I have never been described as “laid-back”, “easy-going” or “carefree”.  I’m ok with that.  But you can’t plan everything.  And I’m ok with that too.

One of the best days I had with my kids this summer was totally unplanned.  We were just hanging around after lunch one day and decided to take our bikes out around the neighborhood.  We rode down to the small beach around the corner and found several kids playing there.  We parked our bikes and I spent two hours sunning myself on a rock and watching my kids swim and play in the sand and experience pure joy.  Awesome!

And here’s a recent painting I did that was also totally unplanned.  I was supposed to be working on something else entirely.  But inspiration won out.  I reached for a blank canvas and just starting choosing colors that appealed to me.  This was the result.  And  it’s one of my favorites to date.

So, while I love knowing exactly what’s on tap for tomorrow, I do recognize the importance of being flexible.  By the same token, I would really appreciate it if you “footloose and fancy-free” types could show up on time once in awhile.  Capiche?

Join the conversation.  Which type are you?  What happens when you try the other?

Coffee Talk

By Jodi Roberts on June 26, 2011

Life is full of coincidences, don’t you think?  I do.  Happens all the time – someone tells you something and you say “I was just talking to so and so about that yesterday!”  Right?  Sometimes there’s a reason an idea keeps popping up – it means you’re supposed to do something with it.  I had one of those this week.

Coffee and LaptopI took my laptop and all my work-related accoutrements to the local coffee shop.  I placed my order and went in search of a place to sit.  As I walked down the aisle between two rows of occupied tables, I hearkened back to my experience on the school bus.  There was a boy, whose name I will withhold out of pity, who walked a similar aisle each morning to find all the seats were filled with backpacks, books or whatever else was handy and everyone was either carefully studying their shoes or mesmerized by something out the window. You see,  this unfortunate little boy had a constant stream of snot of running from his nose, which made him a less than desirable seat-mate.  This is what I was thinking about as I scanned the tables, looking for a place to sit, while others were very engaged in their work, or their phone call, or whatever, and seemingly did not notice me.

Confident that I’ve been booger-free for at least a few decades, I forged ahead.  When I got to the last table, occupied by a girl with a book who was sipping some frozen strawberry goodness, I asked if I might share her table.  Of course she said “sure”, because what else is there really to say unless you’re a complete jackass, which is not out of the question, I suppose.

And so we went on like this, all of use working, heads down, getting our afternoon java fix, isolated.  Until one guy spilled his coffee and we all heard that unmistakable sound of ice cubes clinking and liquid splashing.  “Pick up your laptop, quick” I  reminded him as another woman plopped down a bunch of napkins.  I went to the counter and grabbed a rag and we all had a good laugh about the crises averted while he mopped up the mess.  Suddenly the walls were down and we were comrades.

The very next day, a blog post  from Build a Little Biz lands in my inbox and the subject is “The Coffice“.  You guessed it, The Coffee Shop/Office.  I read it and realized that these people at the coffee shop are my colleagues; a group of us who escape our home office or our “real” office and take refuge someplace more interesting.  If I were to frequent the same place, I would probably see the same “coffice-mates” over and over.  I might get to know their names, build relationships, and network.  It’s entirely possible that these people are as open to connecting as I am.  And by “open” of course I mean “desperate for adult conversation”.

It’s kind of nice, for people who generally work alone, to think that there are others out there who are interested in being “alone together”.  I haven’t worked in office for just about 8 years to the day now and I didn’t realize how much I missed it.  Well, to be honest, I don’t actually miss it in the least but I do, at times, long for co-workers.  I’ve always wondered why people would camp out at Starbucks all day but now I sort of get it.  Even though I have a gorgeous new studio, which I adore, I think a weekly trip to the “Coffice” may be just what the doctor ordered.

How about you?  Do you work in an office or alone?  Do you miss working with other people?  Do you ever go to the Coffice?  Leave a comment and let me know!

Lessons From My Father

By Jodi Roberts on June 19, 2011

I have to admit, growing up, it was my mom who did most of the heavy lifting.  Got us off to school, made us clean our rooms, dried our tears, and knew all of our friends.  “The one with the brown hair” my father used to say; very helpful in a neighborhood of Jews and Italians. Me and Dad

There was one area where my dad did teach me a lot though and it’s a topic we still connect on today.  If I have a business question, one person I know I can turn to for great advice and support is my dear old dad.

Here are three important lessons I learned from my dad:

You can build something great with very little.  My father didn’t tell me this in exactly these words. He illustrated the idea by telling and re-telling my grandfather’s story.  Dad’s dad was a man who came to this country as a young boy with very little.  And although he never finished school and could barely read, he started the business my father still runs today.  It’s a great lesson to recall when you think your competitors have all the advantages.

You do business by the year, not by the day. My dad says this all the time.  It’s one of his favorites. He never lets my beat myself up over one missed opportunity, one less than perfect job, one slump.  You have to look at the big picture, not pull apart each incident.

You’re not a good rider until you’ve fallen off.  Okay, so my dad never really said this in relation to business.  He was actually talking about horseback riding.  But it totally applies to business, and really just about everything else.  You can learn so much from your failures that many times they are really hidden blessings.

I keep these lessons at the forefront of my mind as I navigate my way through dealings with clients, gallery owners, buyers and press contacts.   If I have a carpet stain, ailing plant or need help deciding whether or not to cut bangs, my mom is  the one to call.  But there are many days I’m grateful for my father sharing this wisdom with me.  Sometimes all we need to reach our full potential is someone in our corner.
